Extreme Weather Survivors New York Climate Week Ahead: Times Square Billboard, NYT Changemaker Luncheon, Insurability Crisis Conversation, and Environmental Advocates NY Panel

Extreme Weather Survivors is taking survivor-centered storytelling and advocacy to New York Climate Week.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2026 — Today, Extreme Weather Survivors (EWS), a nonprofit dedicated to amplifying the voices of everyday people harmed by extreme weather events, announced a full schedule of events during New York Climate Week intended to make sure the lived realities of disaster survivors are front and center in this important conversation among thought leaders, lawmakers, and environmental champions.

“Every one of the more than 2,500 people in the Extreme Weather Survivors community learned the same lesson the hard way: the systems that are supposed to help you recover can feel like a second disaster. That reality can be overlooked when we talk about the climate crisis,” said EWS co-founder Chris Kocher. “The most valuable resource survivors have is often each other, and next week in New York we will make sure the people who influence recovery policy hear that message directly.”

EWS’ Climate Week kicked off with the first-ever Times Square billboard dedicated to extreme weather survivors, with featured appearances to follow at the New York Times Climate Forward Changemakers Lunch, former Governor Jay Inslee’s panel on fossil fuel industry immunity, Stop the Money Pipeline’s conversation on the insurance crisis, and EANY’s State and Local Climate Policy Symposium.
