Help with Home Repairs after a Disaster

If a veteran’s home is damaged:

Apply for FEMA Assistance

Contact your mortgage servicer

  • Especially if you’re unable to make mortgage payments due to the disaster.

    (You are responsible for making regular monthly loan payments, even if your home is not habitable, so contact your lender as soon as possible regarding your loss. If you are unable to make payments on time, VA encourages you to discuss forbearance or a loan modification)

  • 📞 Contact the VA at 877‐827‐3702 to speak with a Loan Specialist about your options.

  • The VA advises not accepting a hasty settlement before fully assessing damage.

File an insurance claim promptly

Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant Recipients

  • If a veteran previously used a Specially Adapted Housing grant and their adapted primary residence is destroyed or substantially damaged, contact the VA directly:

  • If you are receiving a monthly benefit check from VA or another source and you will not be able to receive mail at your regular address, notify your local post office and VA Regional Office.

  • Contact Veteran Service Organizations, other nonprofits, and other organizations that may offer special assistance to veterans impacted by extreme weather.
